The 28th Conference of the International Society for Environmental Epidemiology (ISEE 2016) has offered a limited number of travel awards to persons in need of financial assistance in order to attend the conference. Given the large number of requests we have received and the limited number of grants, the selection process had to be very rigorous. The evaluation process prioritized the support to people who performed better in the ISEE abstract evaluation process, to people coming from low-income countries and to young investigators. All the people with the awards had to be ISEE members.
The ISEE 2016 Local Organizing Committee received 46 qualified submissions from the USA and 93 qualified submissions from the rest of the world (29 different countries).
The applicants from the United States were considered in a separate list because they were awarded using funds from NIEHS and reserved to USA citizens.
Ten awards were given to USA applicants (750 dollars) and the rest of the applicants were offered discounted registration fees (290 euro for students and 400 euro for non-students).
A total of 42 applicants from the rest of the world were awarded with different grants:
- 15 applicants had the registration fee waived, the coverage of their travel expenses (six hundred euro) and the free housing from August 31st to September 4th at the Grand Hotel Hermitage located in Rome, near the Conference venue.
- 11 applicants had the registration fee waived and the free housing from August 31st to September 4th at Grand Hotel Hermitage located in Rome, near the Auditorium.
- 16 applicants had the registration fee waived.
All applicants (including some late arrivals) who did not get the award could get a discounted registration fee. In total, 67 people received an offer for a discounted registration fee.
Overall, 155 people were offered a benefit to attend the conference.
